Chapter Fourteen

‘Now, your job is to put the little milk chocolate chips down Santa’s coat, to be his buttons,’ Marg told Kade.

The Richardsons’ kitchen was a hive of activity two days before the Christmas fair.

Marg had been up baking cupcakes, shortbread and gingerbread biscuits since the break of dawn, and Stella, Morgan and Kade had been roped into helping her. Kade was with them for the day while Mitch took care of some things at the hotel and Liz made a quick trip to Melbourne for a meeting with her publisher.

As each new batch of the gingerbread cookies had cooled, Stella and Morgan had been responsible for icing them before Kade put on the final decorating touches.

Blue had popped his head into the kitchen at one stage. ‘Any of those need taste testing?’

Marg had put a couple on a saucer for him then shooed him out of the kitchen with a firm, ‘Don’t come back until lunch time!’

‘It’s pretty cool that you’re a pilot,’ Kade told Morgan as he looked up from his decorating. ‘Do you reckon you could take me up with you one day?’

‘Sorry, Kade. That wouldn’t be allowed.’ Her tone was sincere and Stella was relieved Morgan had put away her icy feeling towards Mitchell away and was able to be friendly towards Kade.

‘You’re doing really well there, Kade,’ Marg told him.

‘This is so much fun!’ Kade said enthusiastically. ‘Last weekend I was over with Jayden and Patrick and their mom and Aunt Liz had us helping to make Christmas cards and some other crafty things for their Christmas craft stall.’

‘Ooh, I’ll have to stop by and buy some,’ Morgan said. ‘How did you decorate the cards?’

‘I did some sketching on some and then Patrick and Jayden coloured them in. We also cut out some pictures from old Christmas cards and stuck them on the front of others. Mrs Lynch had heaps of craft stuff to use.’

‘Did you have a favourite?’ Stella asked.

His cheeks reddened for a moment. ‘I do, but that one isn’t for sale. I’m saving that for you for Christmas, Stella.’

‘Aw. That’s so sweet of you,’ Morgan said.

Stella was touched. ‘I’ll look forward to it.’

‘What about the crafts?’ Marg asked. ‘What did you make?’

‘We made really cool Christmas wreaths using pine cones and gum nuts. We spray painted them and some gum leaves with all the Christmas colours—red, green, gold and silver—and then we used a hot glue gun to stick them to the wreaths.’

‘They sound beautiful,’ Morgan told him as she mixed up another batch of icing.

‘Mrs Lynch had some Christmas ribbon too, so we used that in a loop so the wreaths can be hung up. We all reckon they look pretty good.’ Every word was full of pride but then his little face fell. ‘I never got to do things like that at home. I asked Mom once if I could do some painting and she didn’t want a mess. She said I should be happy playing computer games.’

‘Oh well,’ Marg rushed in an upbeat tone, ‘you’re making up for it now.
